I would enjoy learning more about your case on taxes disguised as fees. I built out a basement into an apartment and the permit fees were over $30,000 in Oakland. By contrast my contractor did a similar project in Newark and the fees were about $5,000. Oakland also required more parking spaces (since changed) , trees, solar electric and water, etc. The result is I will never build more housing in Oakland. I now invest near Bakersfield and Pismo Beach , which is inefficient and a waste for society, the climate and the economy.
